Heat pumps are not a recent invention. They have been around for more than 150 years. Due to continuing technological developments, highly efficient and technically sophisticated heat pump systems exist on the market today which require little electrical power to operate and work reliably for decades. A heat pump works in a way similar to a refrigerator, only the principle is reversed.
The refrigerator removes the heat from foodstuffs. It then releases this heat into the room through the panels at the rear. A heat pump works in the same way. Water, earth and air store the sun’s heat. The heat pump draws heat from these sources which is then raised to higher temperatures using an electrical pump. This temperature is totally adequate to heat a house and also supply the hot water. Even when it is cold outside, the heat pump gains enough energy from the surrounding environment to provide the heating and hot water.
